Bringing Puppy Home - Puppy Week Day 3

Bringing Home Your New Puppy

The big day has arrived - you're bringing your new family member home! While it's an exciting time, it's crucial to approach it with a calm and prepared mindset. Here's a guide to make your puppy's homecoming a pawsitive experience:

Timing is Everything:

Bring your pup home early in the morning. This gives you a full day to help them settle in before bedtime. Evening arrivals can lead to sleepless nights for everyone!

Keep Calm and Puppy On:

Your excitement is contagious, but try to tone it down. Your puppy is leaving the only home they've known, and they need you to be their calm anchor in this new adventure.

Limit the Welcome Party:

As tempting as it is to invite everyone to meet the new addition, limit visitors on the first day. Your pup needs time to adjust without being overwhelmed.

Prepare the Puppy Palace:

Set up their bed and living area before they arrive. Introduce them to this space right away - it'll be their safe place.

Let Them Walk Into Their New Life:

When you arrive home, let your puppy walk through the door themselves rather than carrying them. This simple act helps them connect with their new environment.

Potty Training Starts Now:

Show them where to do their business immediately. Establishing this routine from day one is crucial.

Travel Safety First:

For the car ride home, create a cozy space with a puppy-specific harness that attaches to the seatbelt. If possible, have someone (not the driver) sit with the pup.

Hydration Station:

Show them where their water bowl is right away. The journey might have left them thirsty!

Treats for Good Behaviour:

Have some treats ready to comfort them and create positive associations with their new surroundings.

Set Clear Boundaries:

Decide on house rules before puppy arrives. Can they go on the sofa? Are certain rooms off-limits? It's easier to relax rules later than to impose new restrictions.

Remember, this is a big change for your little one. Patience, consistency, and lots of love will help them adjust to their forever home.
