Our Dream Come True: The Opening of Village Pet Stores

On Monday, 25th August, something truly special happened — we officially opened the doors to Village Pet Stores in Haughton Green.
Having a pet shop has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. As a little girl, I would walk into pet shops with wide eyes, completely fascinated by all the animals. I always thought that one day, I’d have a pet shop of my own.
Over time, that dream has evolved. I’ve always loved animals — truly loved them — but I also know myself well enough to admit that I couldn’t keep them in the shop just to sell them on. I’d never be able to let them go! So instead of housing animals, we decided to create something just as meaningful: a pet store filled with foods, treats, and accessories for pets of all shapes and sizes.
It’s not just about dogs and cats. These days, pets come in so many forms — hens (like ours), tortoises (yes, we’ve got one too!), chinchillas, rabbits, and of course, dogs. Over the years, through my work with the Cambridge Dog Lodge, I’ve gained experience and knowledge that I now bring into the shop. It’s hard to put into words just how much I’ve learned, but I know it’s going to be valuable for anyone who walks through our doors.
For a while, the idea of opening a pet shop was put on the back burner. Life was busy — with my daughter preparing for university, my son starting his second year of college, and my husband juggling his own work alongside what we do together. But then, in July, an opportunity came along. One of those rare, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities where you know if you don’t take it, you’ll regret it forever.
So we went for it.

And here we are.
Our shop is small but full of heart. Already, it feels like home. We’ve met so many lovely people and their even lovelier pets in just our first few days of opening. The support and warm reception we’ve had has been overwhelming — we’re so grateful. The lady we bought the business from has been wonderful, and although we have plans to give the shop a little refresh and make it our own, it already feels like the perfect fit.

We’re proud to say that Village Pet Stores is more than just a shop. Alongside all the fantastic foods, treats, and accessories, we’ll continue to offer the services we’ve built up over the years — pet visits, pet bereavement counselling, puppy consultations, and crafts that we lovingly make ourselves.
Whether you pop into the shop for a chat and a browse, or get in touch with us online to order, we’d love to be part of your pet’s life.
So, if you haven’t visited yet, please come and see us! And if you’re not local, you can always check out our Facebook page, Village Pet Foods Haughton Green.
Here’s to the start of something wonderfulr
