Even though we’ve enjoyed a lovely summer, winter seems to have arrived like a wrecking ball. As I write this, the temperature is freezing, the rain is relentless, and snow is on the way. So now is the perfect time to share some simple, practical tips to help keep our beloved pets warm, dry, and safe throughout the colder months.

Keeping Dogs Cozy in Winter
Warm Beds & Dry Spaces
Ensure your dog has a warm, dry, draft-free bed inside the house. After a wet walk, a damp bed can keep them cold for hours, so check bedding regularly.
Winter Coats & Drying Coats
A snug winter coat is essential, especially for lean or short-haired dogs. For dogs who dislike towels or hair dryers, a drying coat is a perfect solution — soft, absorbent, and comforting, like a cozy dressing gown.
Protecting Their Paws
Grit and salt can irritate paws.
After each walk:
• Rinse or wipe their paws
• Apply a soothing paw balm
Coconut oil, Vaseline, or Sudocrem work in a pinch.
Short-Haired Dogs Get Cold Fast
Breeds like Greyhounds, Whippets, Vizslas, and Pointers lose heat quickly. Choose a coat that covers the chest and belly to keep them warm.
Long-Haired Dogs & Snowballs
Snow easily clings to long fur and forms painful “snowballs.”
Before walking, rub a tiny amount of:
• Coconut oil
• Olive oil
• Baby oil
onto their legs and underside to prevent buildup.

How to Keep Cats Warm
Many cats want to explore no matter the weather — and there’s no chance of putting coats on them!
Create Warm Indoor Spaces
Make sure they have:
• A warm, comfortable bed
• No drafts
• Bedding placed away from damp areas or doors
Outdoor Shelter for Stubborn Cats
For cats who insist on staying out:
• Provide a waterproof shelter
• Add dry straw (not blankets)
• Place it somewhere safe and protected
This also helps community cats who may need refuge.

Caring for Outdoor Pets (Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Chickens)
These pets need extra support in winter.
Insulated Living Areas
Make sure their hutches or coops have:
• Proper insulation
• Plenty of dry straw
• No drafts or gaps
Replace straw immediately if damp.
Weatherproofing
Cover their housing with:
• Tarpaulin (with ventilation)
• Plastic sheets
• Insulated covers
Keep rain, wind, and snow out while allowing airflow.
Heat Packs
Safe heat pads under bedding can help during very cold nights.
Bring Them Indoors When Needed
If temperatures drop below 4–5°C, bring outdoor pets inside:
• A shed
• Utility room
• Any safe indoor space
A few nights of warmth can make all the difference.
