Potty Training your Pup - Puppy Week Day 4

Let's talk about everyone's favourite topic - potty training!  Here's what you need to know:

Ditch the Puppy Pads:

Controversial, I know! But hear me out - puppy pads can actually confuse your pup. They learn it's okay to go to the toilet inside, which is exactly what we're trying to avoid. Start as you mean to go on - outside is where the magic happens!

Timing is Everything:

Take your pup out every 20-30 minutes at first. Yes, it's a lot, but it pays off! Keep a log of their potty times - you'll start to see patterns that'll make your life easier.

Watch Like a Hawk:

When they're inside, don't take your eyes off them. If they have an accident and you don't catch them in the act, you've missed a crucial teaching moment.

The Great Outdoors:

If you see them start to go inside, scoop them up quickly (but gently) and take them outside. This helps them make the connection between the urge and the right place to go.

Don't Leave the Door Open:

It might seem convenient, but an always-open door doesn't help. You want them to learn to signal when they need to go out.

Patience is Key:

Remember, they might learn to pee outside before they learn to poop outside (or vice versa). They don't automatically connect the two. Stay consistent, and they'll get there!

Reward at the Right Time:

When they start to go outside, wait until they're finished before you praise, or you might interrupt them or confuse the message.

Small Spaces for Small Bladders:

Keep them in a smaller area of the house, close to the door. Little pups have little bladders and even littler self-control!

Key Potty Times:

Before bed

First thing in the morning

Before you leave the house

When you return home

After meals and drinks

Remember, every pup is different. Some might pick it up quickly, others might take a bit longer. Stay patient, stay consistent, and before you know it, your carpets will be safe again!
